ABOUT BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, MESRA

Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, was established in 1955 as a pioneering institution of technical education and research. The achievements of the institute, both in terms of research and excellent standards of academic programmes at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral level in Engineering and Technology, led to its attaining the status of a Deemed University by the Government of India in 1986. The Institute attracts students from all over the nation and also from several foreign countries.

During last 50 years of its existence, the Institute has run the programmes in all the branches of Engineering, Informational Technology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Architecture, Biotechnology, Hotel Management and Management disciplines. To cater the needs of the society the Institute has established its seven extension centers through out the country viz. Lalpur, Allahabad, Chennai, Jaipur, Noida, Kolkata and Patna and three international centers at Bahrain, Muscat and UAE.

The Institute lays more emphasis on the development of technology and therefore, as an extension of Information Technology Programme, the Institute has started its application in Animation & Multimedia. The Institute for the first time in India started 3 years B.Sc. degree programme in Animation & Multimedia at its Noida and Jaipur extension centers in the year of 2005. Appreciating our initiative, UGC has generously funded the Institute to augment latest infrastructure and facilities.

ANIMATION IN BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, JAIPUR CAMPUS

Birla institute of Technology, Mesra, was the 1st institute to start Animation & Multimedia course at degree level in INDIA. Animation & Multimedia Dept. Jaipur launched a 3 years B.Sc. Degree Course in Animation & Multimedia in the year 2005 at its two centers namely Noida and Jaipur. As the timing was perfect and there was a requirement of this course, it immediately picked up pace. Five batches have successfully graduated and most students have been placed in various prestigious companies in India and abroad.

The Curriculum and the methodology in imparting quality education at both the centers (Noida and Jaipur) are the same as the faculties are interchangeable. The Department functions as a fast moving community with full commitment to excellence. Guest faculties and professionals regularly visit the campus to interact with the students and deliver lectures. The Department also undertakes live projects in animation from the industry and the production of these projects are done as part of the exposure programme for the students. This field is IT enabled as well as principle based, the course structure and the lab space have been planned accordingly to accommodate both traditional principles and modern practices. The facilities include dedicated animation labs with projectors and 1:1 man machine ratio, an ever-increasing list of titles in the library and spare labs for overtime. There is a common Internet lab for the students.

Along with these facilities the institution indulges in co-curricular activities and a cultural festival every year.

ANIMATION & MULTIMEDIA DEPT. JAIPUR

The courses covered under this department are Master in Animation Design and 3 years B.Sc./ 4 years B.Sc. (Hons.) Degree in Animation and Multimedia. Due to new mindset of people in the environment of globalization, the entertainment industry, particularly film and television, has been witnessing high growth, technology intervention and experimentation. Animation & Multimedia is the area that contains all these main aspects. The beauty of this segment lies in conveying the message in a very interesting and simple way.

The department has skilled and learned teaching staff having academic and industrial experience. The department has excellent lab infrastructure for fine arts, 2D & 3D Animation, acting and well-equipped computer systems for multimedia application. The department has specialized softwares like; Maya, 3DS-MAX, Toon Boom Studio, Adobe Suite, Flash etc.

4 YEARS B.Sc. (Hons.) ANIMATION & MULTIMEDIA PROGRAMME (new)

The B.Sc. (Hons.)  Animation & Multimedia programme is a four-year (eight semesters) degree course currently offered only at the BIT Jaipur and BIT Noida Campuses. This is a modular programme with exit possibility after three years (six semesters). If a student exits after completion of six semesters’s he/she will be awarded a Degree of B.Sc. Animation & Multimedia, and on successful completion of eight semesters he/she will be awarded a Degree of B.Sc. (Hons.) Animation & Multimedia. 

The Birla Institute of Technology was the first institute in India to set up a full-fledged degree course in B.Sc. (Animation & Multimedia) in 2004. The Animation industry in India is breaking through into a prosperous era, offering exclusive career opportunities. There is an acute shortage of professionals in animation and gaming. The course specializes in the rapid development of artistic skills, necessary for achieving a successful career in animation and multimedia. There are ample job opportunities after graduation such as Film Making, 2D OR 3D Character Animator, Texture and Lighting Artist, Compositor, Editor, Pre –Production Designer, Game Designer, Graphics Designer and Live Action or Documentary film makers. 

The fundamental philosophy of the course is to impart to the students a variety of skills and knowledge required for diverse range of career options in animation and multimedia. The course is designed in such a way that it covers all aspects of animation and graphics of Animation Film Making Process. Students get in –depth knowledge of different mediums in animation and graphics such as 2D Classical & Digital Animation, Concept, Character & Story Board designing ,3D Character Animation & Modeling, Graphics & Web designing and Audio – Video Production. The course covers all technologies from basic clay modeling to computer edge computer modeling. Sufficient technical and industry focused education is imparted to enable student to enter relevant professionals fields or pursue higher studies in this field. For higher studies BIT Noida and BIT Jaipur campuses offer Master Programme in Animation Design.  

ACADEMIC SYSTEMS:

The Program shall adopt a Semester system comprising of two semesters (Monsoon and Spring) in an academic year. The Monsoon semester will be held during July to November while the Winter Semester will be from December to May with sixteen weeks of class in each semester. B.Sc. (Hons.) Animation and Multimedia Program will contain a prescribed course structure.

The students will be allowed to have Exit option in the program with B.Sc. Animation & Multimedia degree after successful completion of the required credits spread over I to VI Semester and B.Sc. (Hons.) Animation & Multimedia degree after successful completion of I to VIII semesters. The Exit option will have to be exercised in the IV semester. The student will not be permitted to withdraw the option once exercised.
